Greek Houses
In Ancient Greece, homes were designed to keep people cool in the long hot summers and to hold the heat in the winter. In a house there were lots of rooms like the bathroom, store room and the andor (this room was built for male members of the family). Symposia or drinking parties were held there. Women would not normally enter that room unless they were slaves serving the men. In the kitchen women cooked. In the workroom, Greeks kept large storage jars called amphorae and pithoi. The slaves room was a small room where slaves slept. It had very little furniture. Other of the rooms was the bedroom. They had two bedrooms. The gynaikon was a part of the house where women worked their weaving and spinning. There, they entertained their female relatives and their friends. They also took care of their children.
Men and women lived in different parts of the house. Women had the back upstairs part away from prying eyes and visiting male friends . Most houses in Ancient Greece were built from stone or clay.
Houses were easy, they had columns. Rich people did not spend a lot of money in their houses because they destroyed them when they moved.
