Columns

There were three different types of columns in Ancient Greece. The Doric is one of them. It is the simplest one, this one is very plain and it is the first one that was built because it was the easiest. The Parthenon had Doric columns.  Its top (crown or capital) is made of a circle topped by a square. It does not have a base.

The Ionic type is slightly more different and it looks like the doric but it has a base and it has two stones at the top sides shaped like two spirals. The Ionic style is more elegant than the other styles. The style was found in eastern Greece on the islands.

The Corinthian style is seldom found. It was used in the Greek world, but often  seen on Roman temples. Its capital is very elaborated and decorated. At the top it looks like a  plant sprouted on it.
